These spiky balls are the seed pods of the sweet gum tree. These are some of my favorite leaves to watch during fall.
Thanks to Sylvia at spanishwoods and her beautiful post that reminded me that I had taken this photo but forgotten to post it.

Those are really lovely and the photo is cool
Thank you, Lynn!
I love spiky balls!
Me too! I keep thinking I should gather a bunch and make a wreath or something.
That would be so lovely and interesting!
Thanks, glad you like the idea š

The little spikes are what makes this photo extra interesting. Love it.
Thanks! I thought it was a pretty silhouette.
This is an amazing picture!! I recognized the spiky balls, I had seen some in the neighborhood when I was on a trip in the southeastern USA.
Thank you, George! There’s a good chance that what you saw were sweet gum trees š
love the spiky silhoute it creates on the blue background! if it stays that way when dry, then maybe it would make a nice dry arrangement for room decoration – even colour it if you wish to
Yes I’m pretty sure they will stay dry and hold their shape. What a great idea to paint them! That opens up even more possibilities. I need to think about this more š
