Photo Challenge: Broken — Robin’s Egg Blue?

robin egg shell
Classic robin’s egg blue…or is it?

At the foot of a tall oak tree, I saw robin’s egg shell. I hope the little baby bird is doing well. Congrats, robin family!

But later, after looking around online a bit, I’m second-guessing the robin’s egg diagnosis. It seems like robin’s eggs are darker blue, closer to turquoise, and they do not have speckles. This eggshell seems to be smaller, a more pale blue, and has dark brown speckles. I have tried to identify it, but there seem to be too many possibilities: house finch, eastern bluebird, blue jay, sparrow–those are just some of the birds it could be, and of those, sparrows are the only birds I’ve seen in this area. Hmm, definitely a mystery. Any birders out there have any ideas about this shell found in New Jersey?

Anyway, the theme for this week’s challenge is Broken. My other entry is here, called Toys.

Photo Challenge: Broken — Toys

broken fairy toys
Good God, look at all that pollen on the balcony railing. We could really use some rain.

Poor Iridessa. Her head has been glued back on twice, but it just won’t stay. Fawn’s wing broke off last week, and I haven’t attempted to fix it yet. I don’t think it’s going to work based on the constant head falling off that our light fairy is experiencing. It made me think of Dumb and Dumber, and I need Jim Carrey to scream, “Our toys’ heads are falling off!!”

A while back, Tinker Bell’s wings popped off of her body and were easily superglued back on, but the head and wing are cases of the toys breaking rather than just falling apart. The good news is that Vidia is back in the mix after her months-long disappearance under the couch, so I hope that will take the place of these two broken fairies.

This week’s Daily Post theme is Broken.

pink rhododendron flowers

Some lovely rhododendron bushes are blooming outside and it got me wondering about the name and whether or was related to the name Rhoda so after a look on Wikipedia I found that rhodon is the ancient Greek word for rose, which is also the meaning of Rhoda, but not related to how the city and island of Rhodes got its name (contrary to popular belief) because that has its roots in mythology, according to

Good day for a wiki spiral.

Thank you! Liebster Award

Thanks so much to my blogging buddy Cam at ArtbyCarmelBehan for nominating me for a Liebster Award! I have to say I didn’t really understand the awards that I see sometimes on blogs, but as I understand it now (after reading up on them), they are a way for us to say something about ourselves and to showcase other blogs that we enjoy. Sounds like fun, here we go.

I’m going to answer the questions sent to me by Cam, provide 11 facts about myself, and then show a list of lovely blogs that I enjoy reading (and you will too!).

  1. Whats your favorite thing to do?
I love being outside enjoying nature in some way. I also like hanging out inside reading or watching TV.
  2. Who is your favorite artist? (remember this can be make- up/music/etc )
Beck at the moment. Just got Morning Phase and listening to it constantly. So happy he won a Grammy (he should have won one for Mutations too!)
  3. If you were an animal what would you be?
    Bird. Flying would be great.
  4. What is the best advice you have ever been given?
“Take advantage of every opportunity.” The person who wrote this in my high school yearbook wasn’t the most studious, serious student, so it was oddly sage advice coming from my funny, goofball friend. It’s always stuck with me.
  5. What’s the one item you couldn’t live without?
  6. If you could go somewhere tomorrow, without any limits, where would it be?
  7. What would your last meal be?
I hope I’m not in a position to be choosing my last meal lol, but if so, it would include the highest quality, freshest, most delectable, delicious, and desirable examples of the following: shrimp, champagne, wine, cheese, dark chocolate, brownies…and the chef can fill in some of the gaps to make a complete meal out of that haha. But I suppose if it’s my last meal it doesn’t really matter. I won’t be disappointed for too long, will I?
  8. When are you at your happiest?
When the family is together and not fighting or whining 🙂
  9. Who / what inspired you to start your blog?
I wanted to do something creative and decided to give blogging a try.
  10. If your life had a motto what would it be?
“Keep on keepin’ on.” It’s so silly and corny, but kind of true. Guess that’s kind of a metaphor for my life haha.
  11. What has been your proudest moment?
My kids make me proud every day.

11 Facts/Desserts
I like the following desserts: 1 brownies, 2 chocolate chip cookies, 3 rum cake, 4 pumpkin pie, 5 cherry pie, 6 cheesecake, 7 oatmeal cookies, 8 chocolate cake, 9 ice cream, 10 key lime pie, 11 truffles

My answers

Discovering Home’s questions:

  1. When did you last feel courageous? Describe the circumstances and if/how it changed you, even if it impacted you just a little.
I recently had an issue with someone close to me. We were both in a place of frustration and borderline silent treatment and I took the step to ask what the problem was and try to talk it out. It’s tough sometimes to break the ice but I’m glad I did.
  2. Sweet or savory – and why? Bonus Points for sharing your favorite recipe.
Sweet. Why? Because it’s after 8pm and I always crave sweets at night. But during the day I’m more likely to crave something savory like some cheese or bread to snack on. These rolls are delicious: Classic Dinner Rolls from the old Fleischmann’s website. They have relaunched it and I can no longer find the exact recipe, but I have my copy printed out.
  3. When did you first begin blogging? Which early post (or posts) would you most want people to read?
I started blogging about a year ago. One early post that I like was about the first time I went asparagus picking and it talks about the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. I did more PYO asparagus this year, too.
  4. Create your very own word, complete with definition, and use it in a sentence.
Latungry. When it’s late and you think you’re hungry but you know it’s too late to snack. As in: I’m tired, latungry, and I should just finish up this post and go to bed.
  5. And for the sake of tradition – if you could have one super power … nope, let’s make this a generous question … if you could keep two superpowers and give one duplicate power to a friend, what would they be and who would get which powers?
I would get the power to create money and the power to cure disease. My friend would also have the super doctor power. That would solve a lot of problems for me right now.

lrod’s questions:

1) Have you ever thought of leaving your blog? What kept you going? I did leave my blog for a few months last fall. I think I just got busy/lazy and regretted not posting, but was too busy/lazy to do it. I started up again because I missed doing something creative. I like the different monthly challenges because they keep me motivated (Photo101, A to Z, etc).

2) Have your eating habits changed from when you were a teenager to now?
Now I care about what I eat and try to eliminate processed foods, eat healthy, etc. Completely different from when I was a fearless, invincible teenager.

3) Would you rather watch tv or read a book?
Sadly, TV, unless I’m in the middle of a book. The problem is turning off the TV and cracking the book open 🙂 I recently tore through the detective novels The Cuckoo’s Calling and The Silkworm by J.K. Rowling. They made me want to watch Columbo, so I’ve been rewatching some of my favorite episodes lately. So I guess I take turns between books and TV  🙂

4) Favorite outdoor activity?
Anything near/in the water–playing at the beach, walking near a river or lake, riding in a canoe.

5) Most important person/thing in your life right now?

6) What restaurant would you recommend to others visiting the place you live in?
I don’t get out to restaurants much.

7) Do you like to travel, if so, where would you go to?
I do like traveling,  but also like the comfort of home. I’ve been watching a lot of Rick Steves’ Europe lately so I feel like I’ve been to France, Italy and the Balkans just in the past few days!
